Who builds this

calcsheet is built and run by Dataraft, a software company in British Columbia, Canada. It is written by Arun Kishore, a practicing structural engineer in British Columbia, whose own structural engineering site is struct.work. Longer write-ups of the methods, the assumptions behind particular clauses and notes on the tooling behind these pages are on the blog at blog.struct.work.

How a calc is validated

Every calc is a Python function, and every page is a recording of that function running: the derivation you read is the code, not a description of it. A new calc starts as a draft that only the owner can see.

Before a draft is published it gets a readiness checklist, generated from the calculation itself: every formula as the page typesets it and every clause the code cites. Each row is compared by hand with the code text, and marked with the document it was checked against and the date. A row that does not match is fixed in the calc, not noted in the table.

Each calc also has its own test module, and the calculations with committed snapshots are checked against them on every change, so a number cannot move without someone reading why. A calc whose checklist is complete says so under its title with a Verified against line, which links to the full list of what was checked.
